Design Thinking and Sunsilk Bottles

I was doing my regular hair wash today when I noticed something very interesting.

Ever felt that you never really use all of the conditioner in your bottle whereas it is easier to get out the shampoo completely?

A possible explanation I figured was in the viscosity and flow capabilities of the two entities in question. Any conditioner is more viscous and less runny compared to the shampoo from the same brand(or even in general!).

Now, where does Design thinking come into all this?

The Sunsilk Conditioner Bottle
The Sunsilk Shampoo Bottle

Do you see it?
Not yet?

Let me explain,

Look at how the bottles stand, and how exactly they stand.

The conditioner bottle stands upside down(on its cap) but the shampoo stands on its bottom.

The bottom of the conditioner bottle is made a curve by design so that the user always keeps it standing upside down which is very different from the shampoo bottles that have a flat bottom.

Why?
Simple: Gravity!

Gravity helps keep the conditioner near the cap all the time as it stands upside down and you can easily get the contents out.

Now, it doesn't really matter how the shampoo bottle stands, because it flows easily and you could take it out easily even the bottle stands on its bottom.

In short, design thinking can be put to use in almost anything we do. All you need is the “need” itself. I personally love how this design pushes users to use the product differently.

PS: Us Indians love our jugaad and are frugal with our resources. Curvy(:p) bottom or no, once it's almost over, we wash out the contents using water anyway!
Or at least I do! :p

Nonetheless, a small but great idea, don't you think?
